You stare at the blinking text cursor on your screen. It’s not a blank page. You’ve already written a fairly significant amount. You just don’t know where to go next.

The infamous writer’s block is even worse when you’re so close to finishing. You feel like you have the rest of the writing piece in your mind. You just have to get over this one incredibly annoying hump and then the rest will just flow.

So you keep staring and pacing for a while longer until you finally decide to go do something else.

I used to struggle with this problem a lot. But now, I can get through my writing fairly quickly, and even jump between writing projects in one sitting. This is a method I learned from my time in grad school.

In grad school, I had multiple essays due weekly. I didn’t have the luxury of taking a break from my writing. Deadlines were deadlines, and I didn’t have much time to spare.

So I developed a process to help me write my essays faster, even when I ran into writer’s block. It helped me work on multiple essays at a time. It enabled me to jump back and forth between writing and research without losing my place.
